subject: Hardware compatibility days are gone???

The first box I scratch build was a 486. Although I may be able to
count the 286s I stuck 386 MBs in. I just threw together whatever
parts I got a deal on. There were always random discussions regarding
the best memory. I listened and then used the cheapest thing I could
find. My experience was that if it plugged in properly it worked.

Then a year or so ago I took a MB back to Fry's that I couldn't get to
work. For those who might not know Fry's, they are fairly serious
about selling computer parts. They have fifteen to twenty MBs on
display any any time, and at least that many cases, and probably
anything else you care to put with it.

The woman who was the head customer service tech at the time looked at
the board assy and said "that's OEM memory, that won't work." To
which I said "huh, why did you sell it to me?"

I just went back to Fry's with an MSI K8N AMD 64 that would not start
POST. The woman who is currently head customer service tech looked at
the assy and said "that's Kingston memory, that won't work." To which
I said "huh, why did you sell it to me?" She also said my video card
only had 32M memory and that is not enough to even POST on an MSI
although it worked on the ECS 755 AMD 64.

A tech at Fry's said they had some HP computers. They tried every
kind of memory they had and none of it would work.

And then there are cases. I have two late model cases that came with
P4/late AMD type power supplies with the extra four pin connector.
Both cases provide mounting for late model MBs. Now just try to put a
CD drive in the front. It MIGHT not hit the MB, a DVD burner will
most likely not fit, a plug-in HDD rack? dream on.

It has made me rethink the issue of buying parts from anybody I can't
physically take them back to.
