I made the mistake of buying a nonpowered hub where I could plug a 2.5hdd into the computer directly but would not work in the hub. Then purchased a powered hub and I can use the scanner and hard drive at the same time. I understand that the max length of usb is 16 feet (5 meters) which can be extended five times with powered hubs. A good article of explanation (just page past the winblows stuff if you prefer) is here: http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm Should help to understand. One thing I didn't think of is the usb2.0 bandwidth. you can hook up several standard usb 1.1 devices to the usb hub and they will run full speed at the same time.
