I made the mistake of buying a nonpowered hub where I could plug a
2.5hdd into the computer directly but would not work in the hub. Then
purchased a powered hub and I can use the scanner and hard drive at the
same time. I understand that the max length of usb is 16 feet (5
meters) which can be extended five times with powered hubs. A good
article of explanation (just page past the winblows stuff if you

Should help to understand. One thing I didn't think of is the usb2.0
bandwidth. you can hook up several standard usb 1.1 devices to the usb
hub and they will run full speed at the same time.
