October 18th, 2004 Ciego de Ávila, Cuba Dear Robert Karl Stonjek: The Bioinformatics Laboratory of the Bioplant Centre (Centre for the investigation of plant biotechnology) is organizing a Bioinformatics Workshop to be held at the 5th International Congress of Biotechnology and Agriculture (BIOVEG 2005), which will be at The University of Ciego de Avila, Ciego de Avila, Cuba, from 7 to 12 of February 2004. Please visit our page BIOVEG 2005, at the web site http://www.bioplantas.cu/bioveg for details of the programmed, personalities and activities. This event is the largest in the scientific and technological order of plant biotechnology in Cuba. We are expecting the participation of biotechnological Laboratories, universities and Scientist from more than 30 countries from the five continents. Unlike experimental Biotechnology in this actual moment, an increase in the importance and impact in Latin America, the Caribbean and Cuba, Bioinformatics is one of the disciplines that is recent, of which our country and fundamentally our Centre dedicates important resources. That's why our country and mainly our centre devote important efforts to that topic, which makes BIOVEG 2005 a unique occasion for the search of scientific and technological opportunities. The Bioinformatics Workshop, as part of BIOVEG 2005, is an ideal forum for obtaining collaborative efforts, under the purpose of maximizing the access and distribution of the benefits which bioinformatics have. The principal topics of the workshop in BIOVEG 2005 includes: Sequence Database, Manipulation and Alignment of Sequences, Comparative and Functional Genomic, projects Bioinformatics among others. In the correspondence BIOVEG 2005 contains other topics such as: Biotechnology, Regulation and acceptance by the Society, Biotechnology in the countries which are in development, Production and expression of antibodies in transgenic Plants, Photochemistry, Embryogenesis / Regeneration, Biotechnology of the fruit plants, Forest Biotechnology, Improving of nutritional quality, Biotic an Abiotic resistance, production in bioreactors, and more. Also, an element of great scientific-technologic value of BIOVEG 2005 will be the "Course/Workshop on Bioinformatics Bioveg2005: Analysis of sequences and Plant genome", organized by Dr. Octavio Martínez de la Vega (CINVESTAV, Mexico) in which the essential knowledge of Bioinformatics, developing in parallel abilities for handling the necessary Computer tools, to process the information of biological sequences to those who begin the discipline of Bioinformatics. After which there would be a round table discussion which would be presented as an opportunity for business opportunities and as a moment for interaction with regional and extra regional counterparts with the purpose of scientific collaboration or any other interests there may be. We take great pleasure of inviting you and other colleagues of your institution to participate in this event. Thanking you in advance for your support and cooperation. Yours Respectfully, Cosme E. Santiesteban Toca, MSc.
