We recently got an article on how to check to verify the ESN (Electronic
Serial Number) on a cell phone. The article gave a brief explanation of
how to jam a paper clip under one of the battery contacts, close the
battery back on the phone and hit the function key and then another
code. I have seen a few phones go "up in smoke" in the process. This is
a dangerous practice, and, as I've informed several of my law
enforcement co-workers, "Don't try this on your PERSONAL PHONE!" Use the
method on the gang-banger suspect's phone that you are attempting to
determine the proper ESN for. Or take the phone to a licensed cell phone
vendor and have him check it for you.
I thought I would bring this up on this thread because of all the cell
phone and cordless discussion. Police officers are suspicious of very
young people like gangbangers with cell phones, especially if they come
back STOLEN. There is a quick and dirty process, but I have yet to try
it. I've seen my co-workers attempt it and brought out smoke and a
non-working phone after the process.
