SC> I am fostering a 4 week old kitten for the SPCA and I would

SC> advice would be greatly appreciated.
LS> Perhaps one part of the problem is that the cat is so young. I think
LS> that 4 weeks is too early for it to leave it's mother, but perhaps
LS> it could not be arranged otherwise?
[some very good advice snipped to save bandwidth]
My niece rescued an even younger kitten last year that had been abandoned by
its mother; some of you may remember my posts about "Peaches".
When Holly first became Peaches' adoptive mama, the poor kitten was sick and
had a hernia...the mother had stopped feeding her because she was clearly
going to die. Holly nursed this half-pint bundle of fur and fleas,
bottle-feeding her, providing a nest equipped with an electric heating pad,
and even teaching her to use the litter box. (This was not Holly's first
orphaned infant kitty.)
Peaches is now a healthy, happy member of the varied menagerie at my
brother's home. (The hernia was fixed...and so was she, IYKWIM.) She's an
outdoor cat who apparently learned how to hunt from the other cats, gets
plenty of food and pets from the family, takes no guff from cat, dog or
anything else, and has grown nicely -- she is neither the smallest nor the
largest of the group, and her orange-tabby coat is positively gorgeous.
While no one, including Holly, really expected Peaches to survive when she
was first rescued, this miracle-kitten happily surprised everyone with her
recovery and integration into a social unit that includes humans, dogs,
ducks, chickens, horses and several other cats. Everyone knows her turf, and
even the klutzy-but-lovable canines respect her favorite resting places.
