Sounds a bit like my Thurs night skipper. He makes a very good
crewman when we have the occasional opportunity to relegate
him to crew every so often! Not that he's Cpt Bligh, very far
from that, for sure.
As you note, you do get the feel for the boat from the perspective
of your task. Changing tasks adds to everyone's repertoire. I
think that everyone that has sailed with him for a period of time
has had the chance to drive the boat to a first place finish. Better
yet, all of the crew knows it's all of the crew & skipper together
that wins those races.
He's already "graduated" a skipper to his own boat that does a
good job against us. I'm hoping to shortly be the next "graduate".
I only hope that, if and when I do, I can help the crew that I
need learn the skills I've been taught, and, more importantly,
have the fun on board as I have had gaining that experience.
In any event, I do get to compete against him in the Monday night
dinghy series this next season. With luck, he has taught me better
than he had hoped! :)
... Lets just punch through that sandbar
