I bought a TREK 850 this fall ( my first real mountain bike, even if I
didn't buy the version with shocks). I find it to be likely the best
handling bike (on road for now) that I have ridden. (30 plus years)
That said, I would toss in that I'm hard to fit on most production
bikes. That is my problem though... however I did compare a lot of
frames while shopping... and was surprised a bit to find that the 8xx
series TREKs vary considerably in frame geometry and sizing...
So be very careful comparing between YEARS and MODELS, they are very
different bikes... add component variances and you see that there can
be problems with comparisons... I also had some small flaws in finish
etc... that were annoying, but quickly corrected by the dealer...
