subject: Is Cox blind?

The subject says it all. Couldn't he SEE that McMichael was throwing
EVERYTHING way up in the strike zone?
McMichael is one of those pitchers where you can usually tell within a few
pitches whether he's on or not, and it was obvious that he was NOT on this
game. When he's on, his change falls between the knees and the ankles. When
he's off, everythng's up and it's like batting practice for the hitters.
What's amazing is that it took Cox so long to realize that he wasn't on.
Unbelieveable. I would have yanked him after the triple, and at the very
latest after the walk. It was only a matter of time before someone took him
deep. I was surprised Gant didn't do it.
And going to McMichael without making LaRussa make the first move was just
stupid, stupid, stupid, even though it didn't turn out to be a factor in the
game.

So you've never made a mistake on a simple task? How would you like it if
your boss came in and said "Hess, you're suspended for two weeks"? People
make mistakes. Umpires are people, and you are NEVER going to eliminate
mistakes. And in fact, in my experience with human nature, punishing
someone for a mistake won't prevent the next mistake from happening.
I'd be in favor of grading umpires and taking some action, based upon an
entire season, not based upon one call. If it was based on one call,
you'd have to take action against every umpire, and that isn't
appropriate. The action could be demotion to the minors, firing, or some
sort of remedial action. How do you feel about this? Right now,
unfortunately, you sound like an Oriole fan who is bitter about one call.
