I'm often asked to find lost animals. The trouble is, I tend to discover
that they're much better off where they've gone, except for cats that
have been snacks for foxes. If dogs aren't firmly bonded to their owners,
they're very often thinking, "hey, this is great ! All these dustbins to
explore, and there's a really ripe young Miss over in that direction ..."
In general, they're not unlike small children who've never quite absorbed
the full political status of their tenure - so they either shove off,
can't find food and eventually get run over by a car, or get picked up by
someone who can give them quite as much care and attention as the first
owner. Maybe Weenie isn't thinking politically correct thoughts at all,
so beware. Animals lack sentiment and the reason dogs appear to worship
owners is that they are pack animals and they're conditioned to expect
Top Dog to come up with the goodies. You're only as good as your
tin-opener, I suspect.
