Sure it smells, but I've smelled a lot worse odours than hot soil
coming from my oven. :-) I guess it depends how desperate you are.
I no longer sterilize soil because I have come to appreciate the
balance in soil organisms found in fertile soil. Once in a while
it rises up to smite me, but I think that, overall, natural soil is
more forgiving than we might think from the "bugs" in it. :-)
