Try McCarthy. It was on all the news, even out here.

Below is a cross-post from PRN of a newspaper article about her.

[Yeah, let's pick our elected officials based on the extent of
pathos in their lives, and how sorry we all feel for them. Where's
that Wes Pruden column on shamelessness and cheap sentiment? I hope
this twit is at least better informed on environmental matters than
she appears to be on firearms and crime.]

Rail Tragedy Widow to Make Political Run
NEW YORK (Reuter) - Carolyn McCarthy, left a widow after a gunman's
killing spree on a commuter train two years ago, said she has all but
decided to announce her decision Tuesday to run for Congress.
"I'm gearing up to run," she said, refusing to be pinned down on
whether she had made a final decision on challenging incumbent
Republican Rep. Dan Frisa.
She said she would save her official announcement for a news
conference Tuesday at her Mineola, N.Y., home. The Congressional
district covers Long Island, a suburban region just east of New York
City.
A spokesman said McCarthy, a lifelong Republican, opted to run as
a Democrat rather than challenge Frisa in the party primary.
Local Republican party leaders have said they would support Frisa,
a conservative first elected to the House in 1994.
McCarthy, a former nurse, became a gun control lobbyist and victims'
advocate after her husband was murdered and her son critically wounded
on board a Long Island Rail Road train on Dec. 7, 1993.
Colin Ferguson opened fire with a semi-automatic gun on the evening
rush hour train, killing six people and wounding 18 others. He has been
sentenced to more than 300 years in prison.
McCarthy has never held political office. Her nascent campaign has
been run out of her home and her fundraising has been a grassroots
effort.
"She is gearing up to run because Dan Frisa is for cuts to the
environment and cuts to education and he is not a fighter against
gun violence," said a campaign spokesman, Josh Isay.
"Dan Frisa has not served his constituents well, and this at is a
prime motivation for her to run," he said.
Frisa, a former state Assemblyman, narrowly won the 1994 primary in
a surprise upset but more easily won the general election in the
heavily Republican district.
He has kept a low profile in Washington, where he has a 96 percent
approval rating from the American Conservative Union, has amassed a
large campaign war chest and has the support of the National Rifle
Association.
McCarthy was married to her husband Dennis, a stockbroker, for 28
years. Their only son Kevin, 28, was shot in the head during the
massacre and is still partially paralyzed.
