I'm actually living in the USA at the moment but I do keep in close touch with friends and family in England. The perception of England over here is remarkably different from the reality in many ways, but to be fair that works the other way around too: most Brits don't know much about what things are really like in the US either. I responded to the post not just because of the misconceptions but because I think he's got it exactly backwards. If anything, English nationalism/patriotism is getting stronger than it was a few years ago. I've noticed things like St. George's day and the English flag being rescued from obscurity - it used to be that the English were almost embarrassed to have a national flag, but that seems to be changing. Then again, the ugly side is that nutters like the BNP are getting more votes. -- Tony --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
