  I get similar reactions listening to my pet rats reducing large sheets
  of newspapers to little shreds. Right now my newest Mommy rat has a
  mound about 6 inches high in which nestles 15-16 babies. (Not sure,
  exactly.) After I clean their cages and give them bedding (something
  that causes either great consternation or excitement), I throw in
  a large sheet of newspaper each. Within seconds, a furious ripping
  ensues, until , satisfied and happy, the rats settle down for a
  well-earned snooze.
