Several weeks ago I posted a message asking for suggestions on how to best
lift my new scooter onto my vintage pick-up truck. I receive many responses,
on Fido and the internet, and I thank all that responded to my request for
help.
Since lack of money was a major consideration, I was exploring every option
available to me. Through a very circuitous route I ended up at a commercial
lift gate company that did considerable business installing adaptive
equipment for the disabled. When I walked in a woman, whom I believe to be
the daughter of the owner, asked me if I had had polio? I answered 'yes' and
then she asked if I knew of the Polio Survivors Foundation, to which I told
her 'no.' To make a long story short, several phone calls and no hassle
later, the Polio Survivors Foundation purchased a used Bruno Curb-sider and
paid to have it installed on my truck. I don't know anything about the
organization except that they assisted me, without hesitation, on the basis
of a 2 minute phone conversation. The number to the Polio Survivors
Foundation is 818-996-8733.
I have more time than money, so I hope to be able to volunteer my time,
somehow, to this organization in the future. I am as amazed at this turn of
events as any of you might be. The woman at the lift gate company suggested
that I return the scooter lift to the organization when I no longer need it,
of course I will do that. The woman with whom I spoke at the organization
made absolutely no demands or even requests of me, she just questioned me
slightly about the effects the disease had on me and a little about my
scooter. After that short conversation, she called the lift gate company and
authorized the purchase and installation of the scooter.
I wrote all of this to ask that if you have any type equipment, useful for
Polio Survivors, that you at least consider donating them to this
organization. I can attest to the fact that they can and will put it to good
use. Please understand that the foundation in no way solicited, or even know
anything about my making, this request. I just wanted to share my good
fortune. Take care.
