[From a piece on the NY Times Circuits columns about 6 weeks ago]
Q. Is there an easy way to transfer all my files and settings from an
old iMac with Jaguar to a new iMac G5 running Panther?
A. One relatively hassle-free way of moving the information from one Mac
OS X machine to another is to link the two computers with a FireWire
cable and let the Mac OS X Setup Assistant program on the new iMac G5 do
all the heavy lifting for you. This should work with a Jaguar (Mac OS X
10.2) and the current Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) versions of Apple's
Macintosh operating system, as well as other Macs running at least Mac
OS X 10.1.
You'll need a standard six-pin-to-six-pin FireWire cable (available for
about $15 from computer stores), and the older iMac must have a built-in
FireWire port. When you start the new iMac for the first time, the Mac
OS X Setup Assistant should pop on up and walk you through the process
of moving your old files and settings.
You'll need to link the two iMacs with the FireWire cable and restart
the older one. Hold down the T key while the iMac restarts. You'll see a
large version of the FireWire icon on the older machine's screen and the
Setup Assistant should take over. You can also use this type of FireWire
connection, called Target Disk Mode, between two Macs to transfer files
any time; the restarted Mac will show up as an external hard drive on
the other's desktop.
