subject: CPU FANS

Hello there Nicholas ....

-=>> Quoting Bob Green to All <=-

BG>> Hi all, does anyone know where I can buy a thermo

BG>> controlled CPU fan ( one that cuts off when the CPU temp is

BG>> below a critical level. It would be even better if we could get

BG>> a motor speed controlled fan that varied speed ( Hence noise!)

BG>> with CPU temperature. Basically I'm after a very quiet fan for a

 BG>> 686P150+ CPU. Any help appreciated .... B>G>

NK> at the risk of sounding a bit condascending, Your CPU fan

NK> needs to run all the time, the reason they are so noisy is so

What, they need to run in 18C temp. conditions as well as 30C+. The

ambient temperature does influence the temperature of the components. To

say that it is needed *all* of the time is pointless.

NK> that you can hear them when they fail! :), it fails, then your

Oh, they are noisy so that when they sh** themselves we can notice the

sound of silence. I always thought that they were noisy because they

were made as cheaply as possible, using bushes that wore quickly and

produced annoying noise. And all this time the manufacturers built the

noise factor in so as to allow us to hear their failure. Clever little

buggers, hey.

NK> CPU FAILS with Carbon spike disatrous results.

It will lock up and stop working before any disastrous results occur.

NK> Another thing to remember if you continually have the fan

NK> shutting down, there is a greater chance that it will not start

If they can build the noise function into the fan, could they not also

build one that starts every time it is switched on?

NK> up again and bang there goes your $$$ chip

Crap. Show me one CPU that has been fried by the fan ceasing to work!!

NK> OH and with a Cyrix I am told that they are quite hot, and

A Cyrix is not hot. The Cyrix brand of 6x86 CPUs do run hot on certain

mainboards, only when they are running tho'. Even a poorly designed fan

of the non noisy type will keep them cool.

NK> need extensive cooling, be thankful your fan works some will die

NK> with the least disturbance ouch.
