Well who knows.
I've suggested in my sci-fi writing notes - that it evolves out of face reading
- and, that little movements of the eyebrows or twitches of the nose etc. lead
to a subtle but quick silent visual language that seems to be telepathic. 

As a painter - I notice that the slightest raising or lowering of an eyelid or
eyebrow or end of a lip has drastic changes in the visual personality.
So I built on that idea.

It's a fun concept to think about. But in truth I think some type of tech help
would make it possible faster than evolution could - ex. an earpiece!
