No problem... I lurk, and pop my two cents in when I can, if I think I
can add something to the discussion. :)

I'm replacing the ST32550W Barracuda drive in this OS/2 box ASAP... 2GB
(use it for the OS to boot), 7200rpm, SCA80, 1994 vintage, and noisier
than anything else in here!! I just had a look on Seagate's website
for it... 4.7 bels!! YIKES!

Seagate actually lists it as 35 BTUs when active, and 31 when idle...
the ST150176LC you mentioned shows 39.6 BTUs when idle... not exactly
enough to roast a chicken on, but that's considerable heat that has to
go somewhere!

When I power off the system, I can hear the noise level in the room
drop significantly, and that's only three of the 18 drives (and at
least 9 case fans and four power supplies) in operation.

"Quiet" is the nirvana of power computing these days - new SATA and
ATAPI drives are near-silent, even when active. I have a couple of
rack-mount units here that blow that right out of the water... you
couldn't work with these in an office environment - the drone would
drive ya nuts. 5 little turbine fans to cool the dual CPU cores =
high-pitched whine.

If you're looking for capacity, DANI drivers support SATA quite well
now, and a SATA paddle card with a SATA drive (if not already built-in
to the mobo) will set you back less per GB than a SCSI drive, and if
you're still running an older (non-320 or 160) SCSI card - faster to
boot (taken with an without the pun :) ). SATA runs to 400GB per
drive, with Seagate and Hitachi recently announcing that size.

If I can get eCS 1.2 SMP on the dual-core Opteron, I'll run SysBench on
its dual 10K Ultra320 Maxtor drives, and post the results. AMD64 has
been an interesting beast with eCS, but Roderick assures me they're
working hard on it, so it can be installed on current-generation
hardware without all the workarounds.
