        Something which has absolutely nothing to do with computers, but
which may well be precisely what you've been looking for...

        I've got a line-powered RF telephone bug which splices into a
telephone cable anywhere along the line you wish to monitor. This bug
transmits a carrier signal only when there is a telephone off-hook on the
line, so you don't need to bother with receiving mute signals while the
line is not in use.

        To complement this, I've got a converted radio/cassette recorder
which switches recording on and off automatically dependant on the presence
of a carrier signal from the above bug.

        Together, they make a brilliant monitoring system suitable for
security work or even espionage (Maxwell Smart, eat your heart out! ;)...
And they're worth about $600 if purchased together brand new.

        The units I have, have seen very little use (about 12 hours
altogether), and are still in prime condition.
