I didn't realize that an external hdd configured as a full primary with
Windows would not boot.  I have had no trouble using a flash drive in the
past to boot to a prompt inorder to rebuild the registry and fix a
corrupted NTLDR file, however.

All the more reason to navigate towards something other than Windows.
