No... I don't think YOU get it.  The virus program in OS/2 has to get
PERMISSION to bypass the OS calls.  The 80386 (or higher)  not the
operating system traps out any attempt to write to the hardware I/O
ports as an exception.  In other words its not OS/2 that is providing
the protection its the freeking CPU.  You are right that if the CPU is
run in real mode or the user is stupid enough to load an infected
device driver in the config.sys then the system is open.  To provide
total protection you gotta use something that locks or monitors changes
to the config.sys file.  Of course OS/2 is not virus proof. 
Multitasking systems are not immune just more resistant due to the
protection mechanisms installed.  Its a heck of alot better than DOS
which affords no protection at all.
