subject: extra drive letter with USB/MSD

I just installed my first MSD device. A Verbatim 5 way card reader.

In config.sys I have BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /V /REMOVABLES:2
and the latest MSD drivers. I got it working on a CF card.

I have an extra drive letter in drives. If I say removables:1,
I do not see the CF card, so I have to say :2.

This give me an empty drive S: and CF card as T:.

But I have this extra drive letter S: all the time, even just
booting and no MSD/USB at all (except the USB prt).

Is this just an idiosyncracy of eCS/USB/MSD or how can I get
rid of this unused, unwanted drive letter.
