The same thing happened to a local 202 owner friend. I listened to his
input and the tones sounded "hot" to me (also causing them to "pull" off
freq). Turned the volume of the tone pad down and it worked fine from
then on. Later he told me this solution worked for other 202 owners when
he told them about it, as well.
... I can't be wrong; my modem is error-correcting.
