One of the things drilled into us at the Academy is to follow established
procedures. Also, we're taught to work through a given situation without
causing undo harm to the suspect(s) while protecting ourselves. Would we be
brought up on charges, or found at fault if we shot Grandpa who didn't happen
to have his hearing aid in, and came out of the car and came at us pointing
what we thought in the dark might be a gun? Probably not.
Common sense is extremely difficult to quantify and identify. Thats why most
Agencies have an extensive screening process where difficult questions are
asked looking for common sense answers. No department wants a mind numbed
robot whose going to follow procedures to the letter and kill grandpa, but
someone who can think their way through a situation to a reasonable outcome.
I work with many that could fit either bill, my preferred partner when I work
with one, uses the same common sense I do. We tend to think alike when the
defecation hits the rotary ventilator, which makes life a lot easier.
