The short answer is that there are many routines out there, some
freeware, that will take a file and over write it with random patterns
to make it impossible to recover. A longer answer is that it is more
difficult to keep track of all the places where a file might have been
stored. Some programs make temporary copies, and those copies will
still exist on the disk until their space is taken up by another file.
One could go a step further and create a logical drive to hold your very
sensitive files, e.g. bank data or whatever. Then encrypt that drive
with any reasonable disk encryption program. Hopefully, any programs
(e.g. MS Word) that make temporary copies can be taught to store their
backup copies onto that encrypted drive. That should keep them safe
from prying eyes -- assuming that you create a reasonable password for
the encryption and don't hide the password under your mouse pad.
