Interesting philosophy. I use another, though: sail as if you don't
have a motor. I like to hand over the wheel when sailing with
visitors (here on Georgian Bay, Ontario side) so I can stroll
about, doze, etc. I find myself suggesting more sea room
to the guest skippers, many of whom are sailors, without
exception and much more often than I like (always affably of course,
never raising my voice....) I seem to have developed an instinctive
navigation sense based on probable drift, wind direction, speed,
etc., which doesn't really take into account the motor, even when
motoring, which results in strange looks sometimes at my choice of
route ("...why didn't you just point straight at the harbour?").
