Further work on this, I determined that the non-working Flashes were only those
embedded at html sites.

I started a thread at netscape.public.mozilla.os2 named "embedded
flash will not play"
for those interested...but in short...despite 16 hrs of futzing on it, I had to
reinstall Moz 1.7.6 complete with new profile.  Here is the conclusion of
that thread:

Further  to my last post, I installed BU zips of "my profile" and Moz
trees from last November.  The same problem persisted.

So I gave up and installed a fresh copy complete including profile of 
moz 1.7.6 GA and it worked fine...so I'll never know the problem.
I don't do Moz mail, so I lost just a few passwords, no matter.
I also installed current versions of Multizilla and Googlebox and
all is well.

Sorry I can't be more constructive here, but after 16 hrs. of moz 
swapping/rebooting it was time to just fish and stop cutting bait.
