subject: WOOD COMPUTER CASES

EH> Ah Hah! An obviously FCC approved case and you _still_ have RFI
EH> problems! (Hardly surprising since the case itself has little to do
EH> with the radiation of the RFI, but then that's not _your_ fault.)
EH> -> 1) what is the cause of this RF? Is it the power supply?? Is it
EH> Nope! Although the power supply definitely DOES generate spurious
EH> harmonics they aren't high frequency ones, (at least not up into the low
EH> band VHF-TV spectrum where I expect you're getting the interfereance.)
Here is something to try sometime, try to listen to RFI coming from
your computer. Take and AM radio tune in toward the end of the band
I can not recall ig it is the high side or the low side, but you can
hear the computer on thereand you can hear each key make a different
click, this of course will work better on a real cheap radio, since
they have less shielding?? just place the radio on top of the case
or try with out the cover on the computer and hear the difference.
I have done this a couple time to check out a computer case before
   using it

EH> -> Is it the metal case?? Is their anything that can be done?
EH> Nor is it the "case" that's causing it. (The true cause is the
EH> radiation of harmonics of the system clock from the cables
EH> interconnecting the various components, [drives, monitor, keyboard, etc]
EH> exiting the case.) Curing it means eliminating such sources of
 EH> radiation.
EH> I have two such systems (NOT in an RV but in my house) and they radiate
EH> RFI like crazy! UNTIL, proper shielding using aluminum wrap is placed
EH> inside the cabinet to keep the EMI _inside_ where it belongs, along with
EH> _careful_ bonding of all cables EXITING the cabinet which might radiate
 EH> the interference.
Could you please tell more of Bonding the cables... Is that just using
a torrid choke on them.. if so how many windings to start with...
if not what is it that you are refering to?

EH> Hope I've helped. Otherwise I've wasted a lot of your time and mine,
EH> and probably handed the rampant theorists a wonderful assortment of new
 EH> rocks to throw.
nope Just throw a bunch of old 8086 board instead, tend to fly
     further than rocks :)
