On (27 Aug 96) James Mcgrail Rambled On To Dan Laflin...
DL> It will KILL them.
JM> Depends on how much salt is used.
And the species, what one tolerates can be
too much for others.
DL> DO NOT put salt in with freshwater fish, whoever
JM> Many freshwater fish like a little salt and most can live just fine
JM> with a little bit of salt.
One point is most freshwater already has some salt
in it unless use distilled.
ADDING salt might put too much in, it is tricky.
DL> try to clear up parastics in Fw, and it is tricky, some FW fish
DL> can stand a little salt, others will belly up with a little salt.
JM> Some mollies and a few other, what we call fresh water fish, will
JM> eventually die with out salt. Then again some fish will die, when
JM> enough salt is used, even though the other fish in the tank won't mind
JM> it at
JM> all.
I feel Mollies are closer to Brackish water then true Freshwater
fish, I agree some fish can stand salt, but where one has
different species in 1 tank, it might not be good to add salt.
JM> When using salt, you have to know your fish and what amounts of salt,
JM> if any, they can live with.
also what amount of salt ALREADY is in the water, plus what of
affects on Live plants?
I just feel someone who asks how much, someone new to hobby
is apt to put too much in, suppose it is up to each, but
I am uneasy about adding salt.
I also live in Fla, waters from wells in ground, on beach,
the water can easy acquire salt under ground, and so
could already have enough salt in it that any adding
would easy push over the safe pct.
... Know your roots. Potatos, carrots, and sassafras.
