Finally have my system totally setup properly again after both hardware crash and software invasion by the Klez.H worm!!! Class A: goof on my part thinking I didn't configure the replacement motherboard correctly what I had done was FAR more stupid :-( In the course of replacing all the software on the drive I recovered from a discarded system I replaced the existing Win 3.11 and DOS 6.20 with my legal copies of Win 3.1 and DOS 5.0... or so I thought. Well I did in fact reload DOS 5.0 but I forgot to delete 6.20 first :-( So this was what was locking up system information diagnostic software. I went looking after finding it odd dosshell would freeze after loading. Protocols are in place to detect and prevent the transmission of reinfection by another worm, there were a dozen incarnations of that worm in my inbox this week but I defeated reinfection by taking measures. Damned Klez.H infects Win 3.1 and 3.11 in a way that defies detection by f-prot and certain other free tools either because this O.S. doesn't support long file names, F-Prot, and thus the registry keys are truncated and go unidentified or freeware tools to remove are unavailable for this 16 bit O.S. Hey I've even got the two modems working in concert, the external for internet, telnet, FTP and the internal voice modem for my software answering machine and they are both connected to the phone line at once with the proper software assigned to each! Even without going DSL there's a device on the market I've heard of that can suspend an internet session keeping the existing hookup live while answering the phone, this would be way kool with the speakerphone and answering machine software! I could be surfing, the device detects an incoming voice call, I screen it allowing the 1 minute message to be recorded as a .WAV file and than continue my online session or alternatlly answer the phone with the option of retaining the net connection or logging off! The power saver features in CMOS do not interfere with the answering machine as the drive spins up on ring!!! All this on a lowly 486 running Windows 3.1, just wait until I move back into Linux with more dedication. I've heard the last stable Mandrake release was 7 as there are claims the package installation and removal software was munged in a later release, don't know about the last stable Debian, Redhat and Slackware releases are but I'm getting really close to ordering CD's of them all merely waiting until I purchase a new large drive and get the Pentium up and running. Probably start with Mandrake as I hear it runs out of the box so to speak, familiarize myself than move on to Slackware which to my understanding is more open to tinkering for individual personal preferences. Finally got round to sending you the jumper setting e-mail for the Adaptec 1540 and I bookmarked a Linux tutorial page regarding the use of that card in the Linux O.S. however there is FAR too much information in many many links for me to practically retreive and send them to you. Sorry I haven't yet found a .jpg image to go with the jumper listing. Oh yeah that new motherboard I was so hot on after further examination is lacking in some regards for my application, it only supports one EIDE drive in RAID 0 though it might be more interesting to you as the Promise Tech. I/O card _does_ support SCSI. Currently there are about three motherboards that look promising, Asus, Epox and Gigabyte with the Gigabyte supporting the AMD processor. Not sure that I'm ready to go SCSI yet as it's still a high ticket item due to the lack of market share and economic advantages inherent in mass volume sales :-( --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: FidoTel & QWK on the Web! www.fidotel.com (1:275/311) SEEN-BY: 10/345 18/14 105/8 106/1 116/35 124/5009 128/187 129/12 143/2 SEEN-BY: 150/220 167/133 205/1 226/600 229/1000 2000 3000 247/101 249/116 SEEN-BY: 250/99 254/6 266/12 273/408 275/311 312 278/230 280/5003 282/4066 SEEN-BY: 311/13 343/41 362/627 379/1 1200 633/267 270 712/848 751/321 SEEN-BY: 2404/201 2604/416 3800/1 @PATH: 275/311 10/345 379/1 633/267 |
