isn't all this still just speculation?  You write like we *know* that a
simple chemical replicator took hold and dominated the oceans and led to
life as we know it.  Panspermia is still a possibility, no?  And
hydrothermal vents without dominating replicators?  And others?  Or am I out
of date here?

It is speculation of course. But after careful
speculation none of the other choices make sense.
And as to lab experiments - the only ones that have
led to much are heat cycles. So in a sense the
only lab work that works supports the idea.
