Probably the 21040 is the best starting point if cost isn't much of an
issue.

Documentation from LSI's web site has gotten progressively worse ever
since taking over from Symbios. I've been able to turn up nothing so far
there for what I bought last, the 21002,
http://www.scsi4me.com/?menu=menu_scsi&pid=3326&display=LSI21002.htm
which is U2 (80), not U160.

There's also the 21003, which is the same configuration as the 21002
except is uses a 1010 chip instead of 896, and is U160.

21040 external is 68 pin, while 21002 & 21003 external is 50 pin. Using
a 21040 would give you the option of using a terminated 68 to 50 pin
adapter and being able to switch back to 68 at any point you might
desire.

To do what you want you could loop a 21003 internal connector to
external duty with an adapter or just a hole in the back of the case.

I saved the old LSI 21002, 21003 & 21040 overview HTML pages and images
that I can no longer find on their web site. If you want I can put them
on my web site briefly for perusal and/or your saving locally.
