August,

Long ago, at a local Amateur Radio meeting I heard some folks talk about
one of them driving their car up a hill and parking it so the front of
the car was faceing the streets down below where another 'Ham' lived.

The Ham up the hill had connected a Microphone, that used a Carbon
Element, to the cars headlights and spoke into the mike with the
headlights turned on.

The Ham that lived down below the hill used a telescope that had a
photo-cell attached to the eyepiece, and the photo-cell was connected to
a audio amplifiers audio input jack, and He was able to hear what was
spoken by the guy up on the hill on a loudspeaker connected to the
audio amplifier.

I believe the experiment took place a little after World War 2 when
there was a lot of U.S. Military Surplus electronic gear available.
