About 1% per day is normal.

No, the ThinkPad circuitry monitors the charge. It stops when reaching
100%, and restarts when the charge falls below 95%.

It is mainly to avoid damaging the battery by frequent recharge cycles.
If a machine sits on the table unused but is connected to AC supply, the
current approach warrants the battery will only be bothered by
recharging every five days, not daily, which could turn detrimental in
the long-term.

Li-Ion batteries are extremely sensitive (mine has degraded in 3 years
of shelf life + 1.5 years of very occasional use). I would prefer a
NiMH-powered TP760/765 if it was about traveling with the computer.
