We all know why President Clinton needs liposuction. And we all
know why President Reagan kept on having to have bits trimmed off
the end of his nose. Different sins. Most of us are more
sympathetic with gluttony even though it's mortal, and bearing
false witness is only venial. Perhaps we rank them differently
because most of us rely on the ten commandments.
sin, in religion, unethical act in disobedience to a personal
God. In ancient Israel, there were personal sin and national
sin-usually idolatry. Some Christians hold that all acts are
good, indifferent, or sinful; others that there are no
indifferent acts. Roman Catholics are required to confess mortal
sins, i.e., those committed with knowing and deliberate intent in
a serious matter (see PENANCE); other sins are venial. The seven
deadly sins are pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy,
and sloth.
