MSVC uses a VxD to communicate between the Windows environment, and
the DOS-based program that builds the programs. OS/2 and NT don't
support VxD's, so you'll probably have to open a VDM under OS/2, and
just run NMAKE on your project's .MAK file. Or, you could get rid of
VC, and use Borland's compiler, Watcom, or any other compiler. The
advantage to these compilers is that they are, well, better.
