JdBP> When I was at university they taught me Modula-2, assembly (for some
JdBP> chip I have never since heard of), and Miranda, none of which I have
JdBP> ever had to use in the Real World.
I used Modula-2. I like it. Recently, I've discovered that Extended Pascal
(ISO/IEC 10206) has several of the Modula-2 features. The central features
are IMPORT and EXPORT of modules, portability of source code, and economical
sharing of development costs. Prospero Software Ltd. produces an Extended
Pascal compiler for OS/2.
JdBP> Useful stuff this higher education, isn't it ? (-:
That's one reason I quit working on a Master's in Computer Science several
years ago. I was interested in state-of-the-art modeling and simulations but
the University professors had telecommunication projects they received big
money to support. My interest areas never were really available but were
always something to be added later to the curriculum. After two years of
cramming in prerequisite B.S. Computer Science courses and graduate courses,
I bolted. I fully realized there is not enough money to entice me to work at
something I hate doing.
I like to use OS/2 Warp. I never liked using Windows even though it was
certainly where the big money user market was heading. Obviously the
proliferation of inexpensive programmer tools from Borland and Microsoft is
the reason so much software is now available for Windows. I too have been
investing money in support of Borland's own Pascal dialects and Microsoft
Windows for years. But OS/2 can run Windows programs if necessary and
deliver on features right now which are only promised by Microsoft in a
future Windows OS.
Oh geez, it's like grad school all over again!
"Dear Professor Borland or Doctor Microsoft,
I am here nakedly using embarassing dialects in a crowd of laughing
programmers unified around another standard such as C or Windows. I have
nothing against C or Windows except they are not what I want to do when I
finally graduate to the real world. I really want to learn and use Extended
Pascal for OS/2. Do you think I can get any of my prior tuition refunded?
Sincerely,
Warped Student"
