Alexander exploited one known weakness which was that the Persian kings
wanted to be close to the battle & were surrounded by their retinue
thus making rapid withdrawal difficult/impossible. He won by applying the
"GFD" (Go For Darius) principle where he got his heavy cavalry
together (basically heavily armoured hoplites on horses) & told them to
drive directly for darius & to catch & kill him. He knew that once
Darius (a) hed been seen to flee & (b) was caught & killed the
battle was won even thought the Persians had more people.
This is what won his major battle of Gaugamela.
