IB| I am having a problem with the new type of busy signal the phone
| company here is now using.
IB| Previously, when I connected to a busy line, the signal was just an
| intermittent busy signal tone, and the modem would hang up immediately to
| redial. Now there is a voice message superimposed over the intermittent
| busy tone. It now takes my modem about 20 seconds to figure out that the
| line is busy, before hanging up.
IB| Can anyone tell me if it is possible to set either the
nitialization
| string or Telix settings, so that the modem will recognize immediately
that
| the line is busy, under this new type of busy signal, and hang up.
IB| If you know how, please inform me.
IB| I am using Telix, and a HAYES compatible modem.
IB| Your assistance would be appreciated.
This is strictly a function of your modem, as it is the modem, not
the communications program, which determines if it has reached a busy
signal. You can have Telix send the modem any appropriate command in
the initialization string, but you've got to figure out what that
command would be.
Your best bet would be to take your query to the modem manufacturer,
and see what they tell you, although my guess is they won't have any
way to tailor the BUSY determination.
One other possibility is that SOME modems are capable of determining
if a voice answers the phone, and will issue a VOICE response,
instead of a BUSY response when that happens. If your modem is
capable of the VOICE response, check your manual to see if there is
anything you have to do to enable it. Once past this, see if this
voice-over-busy-signal triggers the VOICE response by manually
dialing your own number and seeing what shows up on the screen.
(Don't use the internal dialing function, just enter ATDT followed by
your phone number, and press ENTER.) You can then set Telix up to
recognize VOICE as a no-connect string, just as it recognizes BUSY as
a no-connect string, in your Telix configuration. In Telix for
Windows, this is part of the Connect Device configuration - in the
Dos version, it's under Alt-O/Alt-M.
If all that fails, maybe the best option would be to complain to the
phone company about their new busy signal not being compatible with
existing communications equipment. If that fails, perhaps you have a
public utilities commission that might be sympathetic.
