Hey Russell! I just knew there had to be someone out there that was as
Pssssd off as I am with the increasing dbs emminating from P.C's!
Thanks heaps for the advice. I'll check out the thermo controlled fan but
the idea of a large heatsink and no fan is interesting.... I've had a look
at the spec sheets on the temperature of 686's etc and look like the max is
70c.
With the KTX fan fitted ( boeing 727!) the temperature of the h/s on my
686150 sits at around 25c in ambient air. Turn it off and the temp
escelates rapidly ( didn't leave it for too long!). What I have found
though, is that if you reduce the supply to the KTX fan from 12v ( nominal
) to 9volts, the sound reduction is around 80% and the temperature rise
around 20%. Under those circumstances and considering the CPU probably wont
get to much over 40-50c inside the case in worst conditions, I will for now
just fit a 9volt reg in line with KTX fan. Current at 12v is 200ma and at
9volt 100ma.
Its probably the best solution for those that want security and lots less
noise from these grumble bums of fans. The thought of a silent machine
though, interests me!!! I remember my old XT case with fan and 286 m/b. The
first thing I did was put a book on top of the Fan in the Switch mode to
shut it up. It ran like that for years and probably would still be going if
technology didnt did a hold for it.
Thanks again for the comments. B>G.
