If I were you, I'd try cycling with Ancistrus ( I forgot the english name
:/ ) - they're not really vulnerable - I cycled with them twice without
problems. You can also perform a fishless cycling.

I heard two opinions. The first, which is more popular, claims that carbon
should be used only in case of emergency, i.e. to remove medicine after
treatment. However, some people say that carbon is a perfect substrate for
bio-filtration. AFAIR, both groups have quite nice and healthy fish and
plants ;]
