| subject: | Too Good? |
Not sure how often this happens to people but have you ever had the feeling that what you did was 'too good'? What I'm referring to are those times when people refuse to believe that you did the thing by yourself, that it is not something you bought already completed. My recent arrangements of MP3/WMA traditonal Christmas MIDI music is my most recent speed bump. I do not write music, I arrange existing well known music in the way(s) I think it should be performed. On CD-DA when played on a stereo system I get 'looks' that tell me they don't believe the music is my own arrangement. Even my brother, who was on vacation when I recorded them to CD, asked me where I purchased the music CD. Flattering that they think it sounds that good, but discouraging that they can't hear the difference(s). FWIW the MIDI files were programmed by other people with the proper _notes_ being within the MIDI file. I start with these and re-arrange the instruments, add instruments, remove instruments, etc. until I get a more pleasant combined sound. I have a demo of this at my general music webpage that begins with a piano duette playing "Maple Leaf Rag". As the music progresses I change instruments, add instruments, change to other instruments, then return eventually to just the two pianos to complete the tune. My "Ave Maria" was one such MIDI file that began as two pianos and is now a small orchestra and choir of human voices - all synthesized of course. Some of the MIDI files were quite good to begin with but lacked the feeling that anyone actually _liked_ the music. I have tried to restore the sound(s) of musicians who are enjoying playing their instruments (college band?). I believe I have suceeded.
