This comes from calibration errors, and those errors carried over to
truly trashy pre-recorded material in junk housings with lowest quality
tape.
 RM>  Worse, the tapes they play usually /are/ encoded with Dolby NR, so
 RM>  not only is the level of tape hiss atrocious, the highs are boosted
 RM>  to a bright and totally unnatural level.
When played un-decoded, of course. :)
