Well this _is_ a hacked down version.
I sent along a .htm file to you as I found that X-Windows
on networked 486's web site.
I was really tired when I found it so I sent the .htm files
along just as they were as .htm.
If you can't read them I'll edit them here into text and resend.
They look just fine with less even if viewed on C drive from Linux
/mnt
I also sent along a file on just how this guy is able to run
such things on old hardware, things such as not cluttering the install
with unneeded modules and commenting out /dev/tty's you're not
using.
At any rate it matters not as if I wanted to I could wipe
this drive, install it in the Pentium and for the price of
a new A drive be up and running on that Pentium with 32 meg RAM.
A bit tired just now, put a lot of time into Linux the last two weeks.
Scrambled my installation using lodlin15 which is supposed
to be safer than LILO. Odd sort of thing too as I recall
it working just fine way back when first go round.
Perhaps I'm loading the wrong zimage and it's complaining because
this install sets up the CD-ROM, I'll have to check out
which zimage is on my boot floppy.
Forced myself to take a break by loading the VI editor,
some reading to do there before I love it again.

WC> Slickest install I've ever seen. 8.1 was a snap.

RJT> Yeah, I liked that about Slack too.

Roy I'm talking about the one where it's hacked down to
26 Meg. install and that Linux hackers web site tells
you which modules to add to get X-Windows up and running
 without unneccessay bloat.
That's why I went back to my original old release to
configure X-Windows, save the config files, mk2fs /dev/hda4
and then reinstall Slackware 8.1 adding the appropriate
 modules to run X.

WC> Perhaps if we're to continue we should move to the Linux echo?

WC> Same here and that's why I don't post much there either.

RJT> OTOH if the three of us started in on there it *would* change the

Well you appear to be a bit ahead of both Charles and I
unless Charles is being modest but it's a thought.
I'm also going to join the list server for Linux newbies
mentioned in Basic Linux 3.5's default bookmarks.

RJT> I'm always interested in hearing about more mailing lists here.

Next time I fire up LINKS I'll send it along.
That's right your gateway should handle a list server just fine :-)
