Competition. Each couple have more children than are likely to survive. Many
die in the womb, a lot more die in infancy. Childhood diseases carry off
some more, and, historically, more might have been eaten by predators or
died of starvation.
However a minority do live to have children themselves. That's what drives
evolution. Only a small number of people become ancestors.
