I guess the reason it seems convoluted to me is that I am not certain if you are always guaranteed that the PROTSHELL (PMSHELL.EXE) is session 1. IBM says in the docs that it is, but you could someday run into a system which uses MSHELL.EXE or TSHELL.EXE as the PROTSHELL, and I am not sure what would happen.
