| subject: | AVAILABLE: Presentation Manager interface for Ada95 |
If I'm not terribly mistaken there are many programmers in this echo that
don't want to use C++ for different reasons, but *do* want to write OS/2
programs in a modern, powerful, yet consistent and safe language with
strong type-checking and integrated support for object-oriented and
multi-threaded programming.
There's good news for you all! Version 2.0 of the new GNU New York
University Ada Translator (GNAT Ada95 compiler has been released some weeks
ago. This Ada compiler uses the GCC multi-platform, multi-language,
multi-target code generator that's already infamous because of the
excellent code it produces. The Ada compiler works just fine and generates
very clear error messages, it seems to have incorporated some mind-reading
algorithm to explain what errors you make.
Moreover, David Weller created PM bindings for Ada95. I included his
message from the OS/2 Announcement newsgroup for your reference.

**** Announcing the First Release of the ****
**** Presentation Manager bindings for Ada95 ****
This free "entry level" set of bindings is designed to help developers
make an early entry into using Ada95 and writing PM applications.
As part of the release, two executables are included demonstrating
(at a simple level, anyway) the efficiency and execution speed of
the free Ada95 compiler.
This set of bindings assumes the developer has a rudimentary knowledge
of both PM programming and Ada95. This release also requires, as a
minimum, GNAT 2.0 (the GNU Ada95 compiler). If you do not have this
version, download it (or later versions) from cs.nyu.edu, look under
/pub/gnat.
The bindings themselves can be found at cs.nyu.edu under
pub/gnat/contrib/os2/PM. In the contrib area, you'll also find
the ada-mode emacs extensions which works well with PM Emacs for OS/2.
Ada95 is worth scrutinizing for OS/2 developers who desire the speed
of C++ but also want a language less cryptic and more reliable. More
information about the Ada95 programming language can be found at
html://lglwww.epfl.ch/Ada/, which includes an HTML version of the Ada
programming language reference and supporting libraries.
