BJ> Even the cable is limited in its capacity.
DR> Everything has a limit. However, fiber optic is "virtually
DR> unlimited".
10 years later and Dave you will say that the traditional fiber optic is
"virtually standing still"... :)
BJ> What if your cable company
BJ> suddenly decides to put another 300 channels online to compete with
BJ> the satellite dish companies? That would reduce the bandwidth
BJ> available to cable modem users sharing the same cable.
DR> But would one see the effect, is the question. That would be like
DR> saying that cable modem users would cause your television picture to
DR> flicker. :) However, I use a different company for cable TV.
Well, theu use different "channels" that's available on the coax cable...
BJ> with anyone. Therefore you have to pay an ISP for the 24 hour
BJ> dedicated bandwidth you use, whether you're at the keyboard or not.
BJ> If that's T1 speed (1.554 Mbps), you'd pay the going rate for that.
BJ> ADSL, like cable modems, is not switched technology (you don't "dial"
BJ> anyone, you're connected 24 hours).
DR> Interesting. Thanks for the info.
No, no, no, don't thank him for the info yet... :) Read my info from a
local teleco tech guy (He knows ADSL quite well... :) )...
ADSL provides 6Mbps downstream (to you)
1.5Mbps upstream (from you)
costing about CND$ 50 for the physical line itself and the ADSL modem
rental.
costing about CND$ 15 for the internet connection.
Comes to a total of $65 for a month of access with transmission quota
set a 1GB for normal access... and I'll ask for unlimited or 10GB
transmission quota. :)
So CND$65 a month... not the regular T-1 rate, because you are not getting
the extra IP address that you usually gets with T1...
... Weapons bans are the first symptoms of genocide.
