PE> If I had my time again, I would buy a Yum Cha modem, instead of PE> kidding myself that the extra money spent to get a sysop-deal PE> on an expensive modem was actually going to achieve something. JT> I work with a company that the salespeople thought it would be fun JT> to sell yumcha modems. I have to fix them. If they are not under JT> warranty, (where they are sent to the supplier) they are written off. RS> Just like most computer components are that fail outside warrantee. RS> And they are cheap enough at sub $200 money so thats no big deal. JT> I'd rather not have to worry about that if I can avoid it. Sure, but I dont believe there is any evidence that say Dynalinks are any worse on that stuff than say Netcomms. RS> AND quite a few of them have FIVE year warrantees too, so its not very RS> likely that you will be caring at all if it fails outside warrantee. JT> I'd rather not have the thing fail in the first place. Sure, but I dont believe there is any evidence that say Dynalinks are any worse on that stuff than say Netcomms. JT> All is well and good if they have a long warranty, JT> and some even don't argue with you if you take it back. JT> But I'd rather not have the thing fail in the first place. Sure, but we were discussing whether yumchas are worth considering or not. I'm not convinced that you actually get a damned thing for the rather higher price of say a Netcomm. JT> Without being derogatory to anyone, the only comment I can JT> make about the yumcha's is that they are nothing short of JT> completely and absolutely fucked in every way imaginable. JT> They wouldn't be suitable even for a suppository. RS> Thats crap John, some do work fine. JT> Each to their own, I would rather not have JT> anything to do with them if I can avoid it. Says nothing useful about whether that approach has any basis in fact tho. RS> You want to watch it too, you say you say that to the customers RS> who return a modem. They can pull the plug on people who do that. JT> Not in front of customers Rod. I thought you said you said that to the customers ? In fact I'm sure you said that. JT> Then again, it gets hard if sales promised them the earth when they JT> bought revision 1 of the crap-o-matic, where I would have advised the JT> shitbox revision 3 would be a much better purchase for their purpose. JT> Even cheapskate customers would be happy JT> to pay more for equipment that WORKS. Sure, but you havent actually established that spending more really does increase the likelyhood that it will work. Rather obvious when comparing the Banksia 28.8K and external Dynalinks for example. And in the case of say the USR sportster, spending more has at times meant that you just spend more to something that didnt work that well. JT> Interestingly enough, while I was talking to banksia about JT> it, I asked what problems they had with that model, he said JT> after the rom and motherboard mod upgrade, they were OK. JT> While he was talking, his voice said "good good good" JT> but the expression on his face was interesting. It was JT> the exact same expression that I used to make while trying JT> to justify the customers' purchase of the crap-o-matic rev1. JT> Subtle, but I recognisable. True, there aint too many that can bullshit well enough. @EOT: ---* Origin: afswlw rjfilepwq (3:711/934.2) SEEN-BY: 711/934 712/610 @PATH: 711/934 |
