There are similar 'stories' about jet propulsion, liquid fuel
rocketry, and even early transistors to name a few. Tends to
make me wonder just how dense the rest of the world really is
that one countries government could foster that much innovation
in such a short period of time and then after the war
everything slowed right back down again? 

Successful innovation seems to require heavy sponsorship or it
just withers and dies.
